Why should a small breed dog have a specific recipe?

Often people aren’t aware that the nutritional needs of small breed dogs differ to those of large breeds, apart from the need for a smaller kibble size!

Small breeds have a faster metabolic rate than large breeds which is linked to them having a greater ratio of body surface area to body weight. This means that they have much higher energy requirements per kilogram of body weight and therefore they need a food with a higher calorie content that is nutrient-dense.

Anatomically, small breeds also have smaller stomachs, so they aren’t able to consume large meals. Due to this, it’s important to feed a small breed diet that has been specifically designed to support their nutritional requirements so that they are able to gain everything they need in a smaller portion.

Our Grain Free Small Breed recipes have been formulated with a higher level of crude protein and crude fat compared to our standard adult recipes. This helps to provide a higher calorie content to support elevated energy requirements of small breeds. These recipes also contain high quality and highly digestible freshly prepared proteins. High digestibility is especially important for small breeds to ensure ease of digestion on their small tummies. And of course, all recipes have a smaller kibble size help to keep small mouths happy.

'Lola is an adopted dog who had a very poor diet when I got her. High fat and full of sugar which the vet called the equivalent of junk food. It was very important to me to put her on a healthy and nutritious diet and so I did my research and compared DotDot food with other leading brands. DotDot food came out on top for all the things. I wanted to keep Lola healthy and happy and Lola loves the taste too! So far she has had the small dog lamb and mint and now that the small dog kibble is available in chicken, that is next on our list. Lola also likes the DotDot chicken treats. They are just the right size for training your dog without over feeding them.'
